Aristotle and Ideas at the IASB Conference
By Gail Davis | Sunday, May 01, 2011

Day one of the annual International Association of Speakers Bureaus (IASB) was packed with great ideas.

We began the day with a session on the history of our industry followed by a Founder’s Panel. Did you know that the speaking industry began with Aristotle? The crowd laughed when they learned of the early day’s when James Redpath was booking speakers for $5k plus oats for the horse.

Today our association has 150 members and continues to grow. We are definitely seeing a globalization of our industry. We have members attending this conference from Canada, Mexico, Spain, Korea to name a few. There is also a trend for publishing companies to have internal speakers bureaus.

What does that mean for those of you booking speakers? As the industry grows – not only from the agency side, but also the speaker side – you need to be sure you’re working with someone you like and gets your business. Someone who you can trust.

I think that’s why I believe in what IASB does – it builds trust. The founders of IASB liked to say that it’s “colleagues not competitors”. It really is amazing how this sense of camaraderie allows us to deliver more options and better service to our clients.

In addition to several provocative keynote speakers, we had a speaker showcase featuring six speakers. This is an opportunity for our association to preview new talent.

I enjoyed seeing John Sileo again. We have booked John for many of our clients and have received rave reviews. John’s identity was used to commit serious crimes for which he nearly went to jail. After losing his business and half-million dollars to data theft, he chose to fight back. Sileo shares his riveting story with humor and passion. He also delivers great take home value. Here is a link to his info on our site John Silieo.
