Ron  Davis
Jazz pianist, composer and teacher

Lawyer, turned PhD graduate, turned professor, metamorphosed into full time pianist, composer and arranger, Ron Davis has traveled a long path to find his life's passion. Throughout his many professional incarnations, jazz was never far from his mind. His extensive body of work points to strong musical roots in stride piano and swing, while retaining a clean and straight-ahead style. The Toronto Star compared Ron’s technique and enthusiasm to a young Oscar Peterson, and his compositions to early Dave Brubeck. Other critics likened his virtuoso flashes to Art Tatum.

Before playing piano professionally in the 1970's, Ron studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto with the late Darwyn Aitken, taught by the classical great David Saperton and jazz legend Oscar Peterson. These early influences are reflected in the style and tone of Ron's vibrant musical creations.

Not surprisingly, Ron is in high demand. He and his collaborators have performed all over the world, winning over critics and music lovers alike.

In February 2007, Davis launched his business workshop, Playing Along to Surpass, at the Young Presidents’ Organization International Conference. The workshop demonstrates to businesses how jazz can be a model for problem solving and teamwork and lead to individual and collective out-performance. Entering audiences’ workplaces, Ron teaches participants how he brings out the best in his performers and how the same techniques can effectively lead and inspire business employees.

Ron has been featured as the opening act for jazz great Dave Holland's quintet, as one of 10 pianists in radio JazzFM's "Flying Fingers" piano gala, and as part of JazzFM's “One Lucky Piano” compilation of living piano greats. Reviewing one of Ron's recordings, Tamara Turner, review editor of cdbaby.com, proclaimed, "if you like jazz, you're going to fall in love".

Radio Canada and JazzFM have honoured Ron’s two previous albums, Shimmering Rhythm and Mungle Music, as Top 10 picks. Ron’s current album, his fifth, Subarashii Live, promises to top the charts.
